Flag Burning

I abhor the idea of burning the flag – let alone the physical act of actually doing so. It flies in the face of everything I fought for while serving in the US Navy. Or does it?

The American Flag is our symbol of freedom. It embodies everything that the United States of America is about. And as much as I hate the idea, burning a flag is legal - and it should remain so. It’s a privilege that’s been afforded to the American people by countless veterans of foreign wars everywhere. To take away any freedoms that we currently have is an atrocity, not to mention a complete miscarriage of justice – no matter how noble the cause may be.

Personally, I’d like nothing more that to shove a burning flag up the southern orifice of every prick that ever even thought about lighting one up. Even more enjoyable would be to watch a nice polyester flag drip, stick and burn all over the jerk-off that thought it was a good idea to burn it in the first place. A burning flag is, in my opinion, an insult of the greatest magnitude to every veteran that has ever served in the United States Military. But I digress…

It’s those very freedoms that we all fought for. The freedom to light up a flag in a peaceful protest just about anywhere you want is exactly the kind of freedom our veterans believe in so strongly that they are willing to give their life to defend. To trample on those rights with an amendment to the Constitution would be an even bigger insult than the act of burning the flag in the first place.

Benjamin Franklin has been quoted as having said: “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety”. I think the same can be said of flag burning.

Whether you love or hate the act of burning the flag, allowing an amendment to the Constitution that outlaws Flag Burning only serves to make government look a little more like Big Brother – and a little less like a government that is by the people, of the people and for the people.
